Got busy and finished three this week, so the pressure is on for next week! Very different works. I am usually stuck when I am asked what style I paint in– I think if an artist has just one, she might consider branching out. So here are three.
“Etch” 24 x 36″, acrylic, alcohol and water on canvas
“Rise” 30 x 30, oil on canvas
“No fate but what we make” 18 x 24″ oil on canvas
ok that is just the working title.. square canvases are challenging, this one started out as a landscape and was a bit too empty. Now it is a horse painting, going to finish this up as soon as it sets up a little- I used a combination of gamsol and linseed, very nice result. More horses but looks a little like a gathering of ATATs, doesn’t it? 36 x 36″ my sneaker in the frame gives it some scale!
Working on a few possibilities in oil using only Black, White, and Gamblin Torrit Grey. I am carving the horses out of the darkness. Those lumps on the beach may turn into dogs… or maybe a lobster, I haven’t decided.
Summer is coming! I love how the color of the ocean is changing in the brighter light of Spring- more blue, less grey. Completed this painting this week on a gesso board in a wood cradle- very stiff to paint on, but very smooth and glossy finish. Hey Betty! 8 x 10″ acrylic on board on cradled wood support.

Just when it is starting to get cold, here is a warm water surf painting. Acrylic, 11 x 14 panel. Pthalo blue, cerulean, and for the sky, I mixed a little Ultramarine blue with a lot of Titanium white. Good idea to use a different, cooler blue to separate sky from water. If there is not enough of a difference, mix a little gray in the sky to set it apart.
Acrylics dry darker that they look wet, so don’t fear the bold highlight on these.
Prints, cards, etc
Painting on a larger canvas has its advantages- one is not having to use a magnifying glass to paint nostrils or pupils or the little things in ears. An advantage of painting a small work is that a little color makes a big impact. I used the red to set off all that blue on the figures and in the background. The red is the amazing Gamblin Cadmium Red Light- one of the colors I no longer can do without. Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse, 11 x 14 oil on canvas.
